I found this little collection of free tree lines. They are saved as .png so they already have a very nice alpha channel. These are very useful for anyone that needs a nice background / midground. Check them out here.
Here is another one of these plants. Download site is here.

The American Society of Architectural Illustrators is offering 3d and 2d plants for free for illustrators. They are available for download in many different formats, including jpegs with alpha channels. They are useful for anyone that does this kind of work. A good addition to any library. Here is the link.
DigArts is a software designed to make painting your own trees easy. They offer samples of what their software can do. Several free trees are available for download. Check out this software while you are there as well...it's pretty cool.

Got3d.com is one of the best free texture resources on the web. Obviously, they have many textures for sale. For these products they offer free samples like the one seen here. There are free shrub, people, and tree downloads.
In addition to these great free samples, there are also thousands of free "raw textures." In other words, lots of images that can be made in to textures with a little work. They are actually quite useful.
These samples have been around forever, but if you don't have them yet they could be useful. There are some good ones. Real World Imagery offers a few plants, a few people, a tree, and a car. Stuff everybody needs.
X Frog is a great software for building trees and plants in 3d. For those of us that don't own the software there is a collection of free plants and trees made in X Frog. They look really great, but remember they are also a relatively high poly count so they eat up a lot of memory. Of course, this also means that they hold up really well even close up.
From the same people that brought us animated 2d people for our animations comes some great free samples available for all. Marlin Studios is a professional texture studio that focuses on creating high quality content for all types of 3d projects. This link provides access to one of their most popular items...a free tree (complete with alpha map).
Search the site for other free samples. Marlin Studios also offers a lot of great products available for sale on their site, plus an enormous library of textures on www.turbosquid.com
Well...the name says free, so we will try and provide free. We think everyone should be able to create professional images, and they shouldn't have to pay a small fortune for content. Here is a link that might help with some of the hardest content to create...trees! This website has a bunch of trees on solid white backgrounds that should be easy to make into alpha maps. Maybe we'll even try to do some ourselves and offer them for free, and give a tutorial on how to use them in case your unsure. Enjoy!
